Questions that Reference a Previous Response

Reference a Previous Response in the Text of a New Question

You can embed the text of a previous response into the question text of a subsequent question by simply placing the unique question identifier number in square brackets. For example:
This question referes to the response to the previous question # 26022. If the participant had chosen the response "Bananas" for instance to question # 26022 then this new question text would read: "You chose Bananas". You can try this yourself by assigning yourself the "Sample Survey for Mobile Use Only" and answering this question in different ways.

This strategy can be used with any question type on both web and mobile surveys.

Use a Previous Response as a Constraint in a Subsequent Range Question

You can use a response to a previous question as either the minimum or maximum value of a subsequent Range question. In this example the minimum range of the second question is whatever the participant selects in the first question.

The following examples show the same concept for a Time question. Note that in the example above the unit type is selected as "Integar" while in the one below as "Date/Time". This is the drop down menu on the right hand side of the question in the Survey Editor. It tells the system what units to use when presenting the question on a mobile device.

This next example shows three Date questions the third of which uses the answers from the previous two to constrain both the minimum and maximum limits of allowable answers.
